OpenAI appoints former US Army Secretary for national security role.

Dan Driscoll will head up “national security modernization” in a newly-created role, OpenAI said Tuesday, advising company leadership and external partners on AI’s uses in defense. The role will focus on helping US allies adopt AI responsibly and supporting “the buildout of democratic AI.” Driscoll resigned as Army Secretary two months ago.

Itch.io deleted “a couple terabytes of ai slop” games.

The indie game hosting platform didn’t specifiy what was purged, but it has clear creator guidelines around acceptable AI usage. The cleanup comes after itch.io reported that daily game submissions have doubled in two months. Meanwhile, almost half of all games released on Steam in October disclosed AI-generated content.

The Adobe-rivalling Affinity creative suite is coming to Linux.

Affinity announced on X that a Linux version is “in active development,” but didn’t share a launch date. After being acquired by Canva, Affinity for Windows and macOS was relaunched last year as a free all-in-one app for vector graphics, photo editing, illustration, and page layouts, with an iPad version introduced this week.

AO3 clone that sold repackaged fanworks shuts down following author backlash.

The creator behind AO3.life, a vibe-coded website that scraped the Archive of Our Own fanfiction repository and re-sold content as AI audiobooks, said they received over 2,000 takedown requests during the single day the website was live. The real AO3 platform is still suffering a partial system outage after announcing some lengthy downtime last Thursday.

Those Steam Machine snap-on screens now have some open source code to play with.

Here’s the GitHub for the $100 Jsaux E-Ink Faceplate, and here’s the GitHub for the $90 Pixel Matrix. The company isn’t open-sourcing what you need to flash new firmware, though — just a portion of the software that could beam your content to the panels. For a refresher, here’s my Today I’m Toying With video:

Meta and Lionsgate are 3D converting new movies for Meta’s VR glasses.

3D-converted movies could be in for another big push, as Deadline reports the arrangement between Meta and Lionsgate will start with The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

After their theatrical run, the plan is for the movies to become available on Meta’s $1,300 VR headsets, along with games and other content.

The macOS ChatGPT Classic app is going away.

A banner in the app says the app will “retire” on January 30th, 2027, according to 9to5Mac. The banner also points users toward the updated app, which was released earlier this year.

What if your Mac Mini was a Steam Machine?

Don’t get too excited yet; it’s running in a virtual machine, and trees and water in The Witcher 3 aren’t supposed to look like that! But SteamOS on Arm-based Macs is now a thing with surprisingly decent performance, ETA Prime demonstrates in this video. Here’s the GitHub page.

Today’s Vergecast: Cloud gaming works — but it’s not winning.

Streaming all your video games seems like such a good, simple idea. All your games, everywhere, on any screen you like — it’s the dream! The Verge’s Sean Hollister explains how the tech works now (which might be better than you think), why it’ll take a huge amount of work to make it even a little bit better, and why games like Grand Theft Auto VI probably can’t just live in the cloud.
