Apple

Founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple is best known for making some of the world’s most ubiquitous consumer devices, software, and services: the iPhone, iPad, iMac and MacBook computers, Apple TV, Apple Watch, iOS, iCloud, iTunes, Apple Music, Apple Pay, and many more. Led by CEO Tim Cook since 2011, Apple is one of the largest technology companies in the world alongside Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Facebook.

The Steam Controller and iOS don’t work very well together just yet.

Even though Valve says the Steam Controller is built for “anything running Steam,” out of curiosity, I paired my Steam Controller review unit to my iPhone 16 Pro this afternoon. Most native iOS games I tried didn’t recognize the controller. When they did, there were problems, like not being able to move my Fortnite character at all.

I’ve pinged Valve and Apple to see if this situation might change. As expected, the controller worked with games streamed over the Steam Link app, though!

Update: Noted that the controller is designed for devices running Steam.

Rising memory prices will have an “increasing impact” on Apple’s business.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said during an earnings call that the company expects “significantly higher memory costs” in the upcoming quarter. He added that Apple will “look at a range of options” to address the global shortage.

Tim Cook and John Ternus comment on Apple’s CEO change during earnings call.

Cook:

This moment for the transition is the right one for a number of reasons. First, our business has been performing extremely well. The first half of this year was very strong, growing double digits year over year. Second, our roadmap is incredible, and most importantly, we have the right leader ready to step into the role. As I have said, there is no one on this planet I trust more to lead Apple into the future than John Ternus.

Ternus:

As Tim mentioned, we have an incredible roadmap ahead, and while you’re not going to get me to talk about the details of that roadmap, suffice it to say this is the most exciting time in my 25 year career at Apple to be building products and services.

Apple might move Visual Intelligence to the camera app with iOS 27.

The feature, launched in 2024, will also get Siri branding, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The changes could be part of a big camera-related push from Apple this year, as Gurman reported Tuesday that the Photos app will also be getting more AI photo editing features.

Bring home Toy Story 5’s evil tablet with Belkin’s new iPad case.

It was inevitable, but Belkin will be the first company with a case turning your tablet into Toy Story 5’s new Lily Pad character. The $49.99 case is made from EVA foam and features both a built-in carrying handle and a folding kickstand. Hopefully it doesn’t come preset to villain mode.

iOS 27 will bring more AI photo editing features to iPhones this fall.

Apple is adding an “Apple Intelligence Tools” section to the Photos app editor, which will include four AI features: Extend, Enhance, Reframe, and Clean Up, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Clean Up is the only AI editing tool already available in the Photos app, but it fell short of Google’s Magic Editor in our testing after its debut last year.

“Welcome back, coach.”

We knew Ted Lasso was set to return this summer, and now Apple has released a more specific timeframe: season 4 will start streaming on August 5th. There’s also a new trailer showing that, even though Ted is in charge of a new team, things don’t seem to have changed all that much.

The long rumored foldable iPad may never see the light of day.

Apple has supposedly been working on a folding tablet since at least 2023. The rumored release has slipped from 2024, to 2026, to 2028, to 2029, and now, according to Mark Gurman, it might not happen at all. While it was a priority for incoming CEO John Ternus, its future is now in doubt:

Foldable iPad: Apple has been working on a roughly 20-inch foldable iPad. This device has been a Ternus priority but may end up being a wacky experiment that doesn’t see the light of day, according to several people who have worked on it.

The latest iOS 26.4.2 update appears to fix the Signal notification bug.

Earlier this month, 404 Media reported that the FBI obtained deleted Signal messages saved inside an iPhone’s notification database. It looks like the iOS 26.4.2 security update addresses this, as Apple says it has fixed an issue where “notifications marked for deletion could be unexpectedly retained on the device.”

Tim Cook: “I am healthy. My energy is high, and I plan to be in this new role for a long time.”

Apple’s outgoing CEO and incoming executive chairman addressed employees today about the transition, Bloomberg reports.

John Ternus, who will take over as CEO, also spoke to staff, noting that AI — something that Apple has struggled with, to put it mildly — is “going to create almost unlimited potential.”

“I was very impressed with myself to have the head of Apple calling to ‘kiss my ass.’”

President Donald Trump had some interesting words to say on Truth Social about Tim Cook’s announced departure, claiming the Apple CEO personally requested his aid on several occasions during his presidency. “He makes these calls to me, I help him out (but not always, because he will, on occasion, be too aggressive in his ask!).”
