TV Shows

We may be living in a golden age of TV, but panning through all the dross to find that gold can be time-consuming and tedious. For every much-discussed hit like Severance, House of the Dragon, and The Bear, there are dozens of new original shows that barely tip the cultural needle. And with so many new streaming services competing with HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and Disney Plus, it’s impossible to keep up with everything new to view. But The Verge’s TV section is ready to help. Our news, reviews, and interviews help you find the next Stranger Things or Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in time to keep up with the cultural conversation. And our essays and analysis invite you to consider the deeper context of what you’re watching.

“I’m so far behind on everything.”

That’s George R.R. Martin, in a big profile published by The Hollywood Reporter. Relatable.

The piece also details new work being done on a potential Game of Thrones sequel series featuring Jon Snow; Arya Stark might be in it, too. But that show is in “very early development,” THR says.

Here’s Lara.

One day after announcing Kratos’ casting for its live-action take on God of War, Amazon has revealed the first image of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in its upcoming Tomb Raider series. Not much else in the way of details about the show, but Amazon says “production is underway.”

The kids are breaking bad.

Well, they’re not kids anymore, but things are not looking good for the cast of Euphoria in the new season 3 trailer, which sees just about everyone involved in some kind of criminal enterprise or... content creation. The series returns to HBO on April 12th.

Something huge is coming to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2.

A mysterious kaiju is stirring up trouble in this new teaser for season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The new creature seems bigger than King Kong and more menacing than Godzilla, but we’ll have to wait for the season’s premiere on February 27th to learn the monster’s name.

The Television Academy wants to know if a show was made with AI.

While shows produced with generative AI can still be submitted for Emmy consideration, the Television Academy has updated its rules to reserve the right to inquire about whether the technology was used in a production.

“The core of our recognition remains centered on human storytelling,” the organization said.

The tomb has all its raiders.

Amazon MGM Studios has revealed the cast of its Tomb Raider live action adaptation. Sigourney Weaver, Bill Paterson, Jason Isaacs, and more will star alongside Sophie Turner’s Lara Croft. It’s great (sometimes) when a cast reveal gives away the plot of the show. Showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge knew exactly what she was doing casting Sigourney Weaver and I’m excited to see her in action.

Duffer Bros. say that rumors of cut or unseen Stranger Things season five footage are “obviously” fake.

If you believe internet rumors claiming the Stranger Things finale had “two hours” cut from its two-hour runtime, and have ignored actors and others saying that the claim is fake, the show’s creators have responded.

Asked about it by Variety, Matt Duffer said, “Obviously, that’s not a real thing,” while Ross Duffer added, “I don’t think there’s a single cut scene in the entire season.”

Is it bad that I want to watch Wonder Man more than the next major Marvel movie after a single trailer?

Personally, I don’t have superhero movie fatigue. The powers aren’t the problem; I just think we need a little more comedy and a little less fate-of-the-world drama! This one is Wonder Man, an 8-episode miniseries coming January 27th to Disney Plus. It’s meta in more ways than one.

The Strangest Thing.

The main Stranger Things series is coming to an end when the final episode is released tomorrow, on New Year’s Eve at 8PM ET.

Netflix released this new trailer for the finale, which is also going to be shown in theaters, where people can watch together regardless of their familiarity with “shipping” and/or fandom designation.

Stranger Things fandom drama strikes one more time.

In an Elite Daily interview ahead of this week’s penultimate release, series star Gaten Matarazzo referenced the “Stonathan” pairing and said he liked the idea behind “Steddie” fanfics.

But saying the “Byler” shipping between Will and Mike, was “very funny. I see them as just very good friends,” seemingly went too far for some, with social media posts targeting the interviewer, and some even claiming it was a fake quote.

Monsters inc.

Apple just announced that, in addition to the upcoming second season, a spinoff of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is also on the way that will star young Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell). Here’s the logline:

The spinoff series will follow the story of Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who in 1984 went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.
