Digital cameras changed photography, and now smartphones are changing digital cameras. There’s never been more interesting ways to take a picture or record a video, and there’s also never been more ways to view those images. We’re focused on finding the most interesting innovations happening in all parts of photography.
The Xsnap 7 Pro’s four cameras include a pop-out wearable action cam and a night vision camera that can see in the dark.

The Leaptic Cube action camera that Dreame announced back in January will be available in the US, the company says. It’s priced to compete with Insta360’s Go Ultra, but shoots up to 8K video rather than 4K. It’s expected to ship in October, and in the meantime Dreame has a few more camera concepts it’s showing off at IFA, because of course it does.
After debuting in China last month, the follow-up to DJI’s first 360-degree camera will launch globally on September 15th starting at €589, but not in the US. The Osmo 360 II features the same dual 1/1.1-inch square sensors as the original but bumps 8K video capture to 60fps with a wider dynamic range to improve low-light performance.
Player-mounted cameras aren’t entirely new to the world of football. According to ESPN, they’ve been widely used by colleges, and the Eagles were experimenting as early as 2016. But this year they’ve been adopted much more broadly in the NFL, with at least six teams having embraced the tech.
In some cases, it’s for the vision the camera provides, which helps coaches and players see each play from the quarterback’s vantage point. In others, the value is in giving coaches a peek into the communication taking place on the field, helping them get deeper insight into how QBs and other players -- such as the center making protection calls -- are communicating at the line and in the huddle. The cameras have even been experimented with on defense.
How is Amazon getting away with this? This isn’t a third-party seller; they’re shipped and sold by Amazon Germany. Even DJI knows the DJI Pocket 4P isn’t legal to import, but Amazon’s been offering one of the best prices to US buyers for over a week now.

After launching in China last month, Godox’s C100 digital camera is now available for preorder in the US through Amazon for $44.90. This prototype is a fully functional Game Boy Pocket, with a removable Game Boy Camera module and interchangeable CS-mount lenses! It’s from 8-bit photog Crissa Graves, who previously made a Game Boy Camera that fully fits inside a cartridge. “You can still play Tetris and Pokemon one-handed,” she tells me — but no speaker.
The HoverAir Versa is the next entry from the flying selfie cam company. No date or price yet, but it should hit Indiegogo in August. I’d wait for retail: We liked X1, but X1 Pro had lots of early issues, and the company can’t legally ship its Aqua (or likely this Versa) to the US at all.

If so, that would be new — the FCC proposed a $25,000 fine against Xtra for failing to respond to its letters, and has since revealed plans to ban Xtra from importing and selling more of its existing cameras in the US. Xtra might be canceling its new DJI Osmo Pocket 4 Pro variant, too.
World Cup cameo aside, we haven’t heard much since MWC, but Honor is gearing up to release the gimbal-equipped phone in China soon. It’s teasing the camera’s capabilities, including a 200-megapixel, f/1.6, 1/1.2.8-inch-type gimbal camera, and a separate 200-megapixel, f/2.6, 1/1.4-inch-type periscope. The gimbal itself will support automatic subject tracking and six different shooting modes.

The new Sony FX5 has a huge list of features for cinematographers. To name a few: a full-frame fully-stacked 5K sensor with open gate recording, three base ISO settings, dual gain shooting, and up to 120fps recording. And instead of just a typical add-on handle for XLR connections, you can instead slap on a $698 tiltable OLED viewfinder.

The Sony Alpha Instagram account shared a short and vague teaser for a new Sony RX10 camera that will be announced on July 9th at 10AM ET. The last version was 2017’s RX10 IV that launched with a 24-600mm 25x optical zoom lens, a 20.1-megapixel 1-inch sensor, and up to 24fps capture capabilities with autofocus and tracking.
